Our Gastroenterology Services

We take pride in offering comprehensive gastroenterology services on-site for patient convenience. Some of the key services and procedures available at our Forest Hills practice include

Endoscopy

Diagnostic Endoscopy

Common concerns: Colon cancer screening, rectal bleeding, family history of colon cancer

We perform upper endoscopy (EGD) to examine the esophagus, stomach, and upper small intestine. This helps diagnose ulcers, gastritis, H. pylori infections, celiac disease, and more. The procedure is quick, and patients are sedated for comfort.

Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy

Common concerns: Persistent heartburn, difficulty swallowing, unexplained stomach pain

As both a diagnostic and preventive tool, colonoscopy allows us to visualize the colon and rectum. We use the latest high-definition scopes for polyp detection and removal. Our prep instructions are easy to follow, and our team supports you through the process (we know nobody likes prep, but we make it as smooth as possible!

Hemorrhoid

Hemorrhoid Treatment

Common concerns: Rectal pain, bleeding, itching, discomfort sitting

For patients suffering from hemorrhoids, we offer both medical management and in-office procedures (such as banding) to eliminate hemorrhoids and alleviate pain and bleeding.

Capsule Endoscopy

Capsule Endoscopy

Common concerns: Heartburn, regurgitation, chest pain, chronic cough

For evaluating the small intestine, we offer capsule endoscopy. A pill-sized camera you swallow that takes pictures of your digestive tract. This is useful for obscure GI bleeding or Crohn's disease assessment.

Nutrition

Nutrition Counseling

Common concerns: Colon cancer screening, rectal bleeding, family history of colon cancer

True to our name, we integrate nutrition guidance into our care. Our team can counsel you on dietary modifications for GERD, IBS, celiac disease, or other conditions. A personalized diet can significantly improve GI symptoms, and we're here to help you implement it.

Throughout any procedure or treatment, patient safety and comfort are paramount. Our physicians will explain the procedure beforehand and provide detailed post-procedure instructions. We also follow up to ensure you're recovering well and your questions are answered.

Find Your Starting Point

Which Gastroenterology Service Is Right for You?

Find the right visit for your digestive concern.

If you have heartburn that doesn't respond to antacids, what should you start with?

Start with an upper endoscopy evaluation to check for reflux esophagitis, ulcers, H. pylori, or Barrett's esophagus.

See upper endoscopy details

If you are 45 or older and have never had a colon cancer screening, what should you do?

Schedule a screening colonoscopy. Average-risk patients begin at age 45; if a parent or sibling had colon cancer, start at age 40 or 10 years before that relative's diagnosis.

If you are dealing with abdominal pain, bloating, or changes in bowel habits, what service should you start with?

Schedule an office consultation. After a thorough history and exam, your gastroenterologist may recommend blood work, stool tests, imaging, or endoscopic evaluation depending on your symptoms.

Request an appointment

If you have rectal bleeding, pain, or itching around the anus, where should you start?

Schedule a hemorrhoid evaluation. We treat internal and external hemorrhoids and can rule out other causes of rectal bleeding.

If unexplained anemia, weight loss, or suspected small-bowel disease is on the table, what test fits?

A capsule endoscopy looks at the small intestine, which is 22 feet long and cannot be reached by upper endoscopy or colonoscopy. We have performed roughly 1,500 capsule endoscopies in the past decade.

If you have IBS, Crohn's disease, or ulcerative colitis already, what does ongoing care look like here?

We tailor a treatment plan based on your specific symptoms, objective findings from tests, and your preferences. Treatments range from dietary changes to biologics.

"Most people don't come in because they love the test. They come because something doesn't feel right. My job is to listen carefully, choose the right procedure, and make sure you understand what happens at every step."

FAQ

Common Patient Questions

We understand you may have concerns about your procedure. Here are answers to questions our Forest Hills patients frequently ask.

A gastroenterologist is a doctor specializing in the digestive system (esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas). You should see a gastroenterologist if you have persistent digestive symptoms such as frequent heartburn, abdominal pain, bloating, changes in bowel habits (chronic constipation or diarrhea), blood in your stool, difficulty swallowing, or if you are due for a colonoscopy (for cancer screening or polyp removal). Essentially, any ongoing issue related to digestion that isn't resolved by primary care deserves a specialist's evaluation. Our clinic can promptly perform necessary tests (like endoscopy or ultrasound) to diagnose the issue and get you on the right treatment.
For a regular office consultation, there's not much you need to do to prepare, just bring your ID, insurance card, a list of any medications you're taking, and any prior relevant medical records or test results. It's often helpful to write down your symptoms (how long you've had them, what triggers them, etc.) and any questions you want to ask, so we make sure all your concerns are addressed. For specific procedures such as colonoscopy or endoscopy, we will provide you with clear, written preparation instructions well in advance. For example, a colonoscopy typically requires a bowel prep the day before (a special laxative solution and a clear liquid diet). We know that sounds daunting, but we give you detailed steps and tips to make it as easy as possible. You'll also need to arrange for someone to accompany you to drive you home afterwards due to sedation. Rest assured, our staff will walk you through all prep steps when scheduling your procedure, and we're just a phone call away if you have any prep questions. Following the prep instructions closely is important for a successful, accurate procedure.
We accept most major insurance plans, please call us to verify your specific plan. For any services not covered by insurance or if you're a self-pay patient, we will inform you of the costs upfront. We strive to be transparent and work with patients to arrange payment plans if needed. Our goal is to ensure you get the care you need without unexpected bills. Our billing staff can answer any detailed questions about coverage and costs.
It's completely normal to feel nervous about procedures like an endoscopy or colonoscopy. The good news is these procedures are very routine for us and we take extensive measures to ensure you're comfortable and pain-free. You will receive sedation (a mild anesthesia through an IV) administered by a qualified anesthesia professional, so you won't feel pain or even be aware during the procedure. Most patients wake up with little to no memory of the exam. You might feel groggy for a short time after, but our team will monitor you until you're fully awake and provide post-procedure care instructions. If at any point during any exam you feel discomfort, we stop and address it. Your safety and comfort are our top priorities. We encourage you to discuss any anxieties with Dr. Davidoff beforehand. He will explain exactly what to expect to put your mind at ease. Patients often tell us afterwards that the anticipation was worse than the actual procedure, which they breezed through comfortably.

More Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

We understand you may have concerns about your procedure. Here are answers to questions our Forest Hills patients frequently ask.

Patients come to see for a large variety of gastrointestinal issues, not just digestive issues. We see patients for reflux, abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, and other common GI ailments. We also evaluate patients for colon cancer screening as well as for treatment of such complex diseases as inflammatory bowel disease, various types of liver diseases, pancreatic problems, among other serious issues.
We tailor our approach to each and every patient. We start with obtaining a thorough history and doing a targeted physical exam. Depending on the patient's symptoms and history, we then can proceed with blood work, stool tests, imaging studies as well as endoscopic evaluation; all depending on what exactly is going on with that specific patient.
In any condition, including gastrointestinal conditions, early detection is key and can help avoid bad outcomes and/or invasive/painful procedures. For example, a screening colonoscopy is the mainstay for prevention of colon cancer. If a patient undergoes a screening colonoscopy on time (at age 45 for most patients) and a polyp is found, it can be quickly removed, thereby preventing colon cancer. If this does not happen and the patient develops colon cancer, then that patient has to undergo the initial colonoscopy, followed by imaging tests, surgery, chemotherapy, among other invasive/painful/unpleasant procedures/tests. Thus, as the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
First we obtain a thorough history from the patient. Then, based on the patient's specific symptoms, objective findings from various tests, as well as patient preference, we develop a treatment strategy that will work for the specific patient.
There is street parking and there is a parking garage 1 block away from the office.
